Your Moving Checklist

It’s an exciting time, and there’s a lot to do before you leave for Canada. This checklist will help ensure that you have everything ready when it’s time to go.

Get your paperwork together — You’ll want to have your valid immigrant visa, passport, birth certificate and immunization and health records up to date and ready to go when you leave. You’ll find a complete list of essential documents and important items, as well as helpful tips, at Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Exchange some money into Canadian funds — When you arrive, you’re likely to need cash for small purchases, taxis and so on. Use the RBC Currency Converter to estimate on how many Canadian dollars your money will buy.

Find out if you qualify for assistance — Canada offers special benefits programs to assist certain types of immigrants. Find out whether you’re eligible.

Lay the groundwork for your finances — Get to know about Canada’s monetary system, so you’ll be able to start planning for major expenses like housing and healthcare as soon as you arrive.

Get a head start on your banking needs — You don’t need to wait until you’re in Canada to start the process for opening a bank account with RBC Royal Bank.

Check the weather — Depending on where you are moving, and what the weather is like there, you and your family may need special clothing to be comfortable when you arrive.

Make sure your health is protected — When you arrive in Canada, you must apply for a provincial health card in order to access Canada’s public healthcare system. You may also need to arrange for temporary health insurance coverage before your Canadian insurance becomes valid.

Make arrangements for your car — Here’s what you need to know if you plan on bringing your vehicle with you to Canada.

Look into becoming a permanent resident or Canadian citizen — Even before you arrive, you can start preparing for citizenship status or permanent resident status.
