We've Been Here for Canadians Since 1864
Our history starts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1864,
when we were known as the Merchants' Bank. In 1901,
as we expanded into the rest of Canada, we changed our
name to the Royal Bank of Canada. We opened our first
international branch in Havana, Cuba in 1899 and by
1925, had 121 branches in North and South America, London,
Paris and Barcelona.
In 2004, we were named Canada's most respected company
for the third year in a row — and today, we operate around
the world, providing our clients with all the services
they need, often in the language of their choice. We've
been here for Canadians since 1864.
