Understanding Credit

To borrow money in Canada, you first need to establish a Canadian credit history – proof to potential lenders that you can be relied upon to pay your bills and make repayments on time.

A credit history is a list of facts, gathered from financial institutions, retailers and other lenders, about how you have handled debt in the past. In Canada, there are three central credit agencies that track this information and develop a profile of your Canadian creditworthiness, called your credit rating.

3 This offer may be withdrawn at any time; interest rates are subject to change without notice.
4 Savings are based on a comparison that is current as of June 30, 2009 and was developed using information from competitor's public websites. Products and offers being compared are those currently being targeted to the new Canadian/immigrant market and compare Year 1 costs and savings. Annual savings are calculated based on a comparison of the cost of banking service fees for a typical account holder with an RBC Signature No Limit account vs. a banking product being promoted specifically to this market segment by a competitor. For this calculation, the following assumptions were made regarding the use of services by a typical account holder: 30 debit transactions per month, 3 Interac ATM withdrawals per month, use of Overdraft Protection 6 times per year, 2 Interac email money transfers per month, 3 money orders or drafts, sending 1 international remittance per month, use of a small safe deposit box, 1 personal cheque order annually and $1500 CDN traveler's cheques purchased annually.
5 As measured by market capitalization and assets.

7 In January 2009, RBC has recorded the largest market share of small business owner clients than reported by the main financial institutions in Canada.
8 As of April 2009, RBC Royal Bank has a total of 1,188 mortgage specialists; 630 mobile financial planners (investment retirement planners); 1,200 financial planners and 200 licensed mutual funds agents available by phone.
