Water

Although over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, only 2.5 percent is fresh water, and demand for fresh water is increasing with population growth. Around the world, more than one billion people lack access to clean water or sanitation management, and water-related diseases are the leading cause of death. The availability of fresh water and fresh water ecosystems, such as wetlands, are affected by climate change, the loss of biodiversity, pollution, urbanization and industrialization.

Studies show that large areas of northern China and Africa, and parts of the Middle East, India, Mexico, and North America may soon face severe water shortages. According to the World Bank, scarcity of freshwater is likely to be a major factor interfering with economic development in the coming decades.

Watershed management, conservation and water treatment can improve resources for regions in distress and ensure the health of our environment, communities and economy.
