RBC named one of Canada's "Best 50 Corporate Citizens"
TORONTO, June 22, 2009— Today, RBC was named as one
of the "Best 50 Corporate Citizens" in Canada, based
on an evaluation of the environmental, social and governance
performance of Canada's leading companies by Corporate Knights
magazine.
This ranking, based on publicly available information, scores
companies across a variety of indicators, including taxes
paid, pension fund health, board diversity and independence,
and executive compensation. In addition, financial services
companies were rated on factors such as the proportion of
sustainable assets under management, risk management, and
support for aboriginal communities. These sector-specific
key performance indicators acknowledge that companies can
use their core competencies to better society.
This honour adds to an impressive suite of recognition garnered
by RBC for programs and performance related to sustainability
and corporate responsibility.
In 2009, RBC was named one of the world's top 100 sustainable
companies, one of Canada's Greenest Employers, one of Canada's
Best Diversity Employers, one of Canada's 50 Most Socially
Responsible Corporations and one of the Best Workplaces in
Canada. RBC is also listed on the 2008-2009 Dow Jones Sustainability
Index, recognizing the world's financial, social and environmental
corporate leaders, as well as the Jantzi Social Index and
the FTSE4Good Index. RBC was among 67 companies and one of
only 18 financial institutions worldwide named to the Carbon
Disclosure Leadership Index 2008, a prestigious honour roll
of world leaders at understanding and managing the financial
risks and opportunities resulting from climate change.
"The only way a company can survive tough economic times
is by managing its financial, social and environmental performance,
and paying close attention to all three. RBC has a focused
approached to sustainability, a disciplined strategy, sound
risk management, strong balance sheet, and a diversified business
mix," said Gordon M. Nixon, president and chief executive
officer, RBC. "I'm proud that RBC and our employees continue
to be recognized for our efforts to do business in a sustainable
and responsible manner."
RBC considers corporate responsibility to include ethical
business practices, having a positive economic impact, operating
with integrity in the marketplace, providing a supportive
workplace, being environmentally sustainable and contributing
to communities.
